Unmissable in Hollywood productions, Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell tackled the immersive soundtrack of "

It is an original soundtrack that should mark the history of the genre.

For its first foray into the world of video games with the MMO (massively multi-player) "New World", Amazon Game Studios has offered the services of two gifted composers, Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell, the duo behind the original music. series "Game of Thrones", "Westworld" or the saga "Iron Man".

Interview between these two very accomplice maestros who let their imagination and their instruments speak for themselves.

Objective: to slide PC players into the shoes of characters who explore, evolve and fight in a universe inspired by 18th century America.

Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell sign a soundtrack inspired by their experience on the "Game of Thrones" series.

What is the difference in the composition of a film or series soundtrack and that of a video game like “New World”, a massively multiplayer role-playing game?

RAMIN DJAWADI.

There are sometimes cutscenes in video games where it is easy to synchronize music to an action like in the cinema, but for most games, it is above all necessary to be based on an atmosphere and to enrich it. We didn't have access to any in-game footage and there was no fixed storyline to guide us. You never know how the player will react in the game when you write the soundtrack, but the music should always support the intensity of a scene.

BRANDON CAMPBELL

.

We didn't have a real script available to create the music but rather descriptions of parts of the game. So we started to work a bit blindly on music that would correspond for example to a fight scene or a night exploration.

We tried out several instruments and wrote the music before recording it with a large orchestra.

Where did you find your inspiration for composing this video game music?

RD

.

We started from a blank page so everything was possible in music.

The composition takes place at the same time as the creation of the game. We therefore cannot play it for inspiration.

Everything is assembled as you go.

BC.

The music had to be epic but also believable, a bit like in "Game of Thrones".

We asked to see any items that were already ready while the game was still in production such as concept art, early renderings of characters, their weapons, and descriptions of in-game creatures or sets.

You had already worked together on the very popular game “Medal of Honor”, what was the challenge in a multiplayer and online game?

RD

. The story isn't told from a single character's perspective like in other games we've worked on and that's a big difference. Stories and atmospheres mix in a gigantic world and we had to grasp all its subtleties to stick to this universe as well as possible. If you pause the game and only listen to the music, it should enchant you and immediately remind you of a place or experience in the game, if we have done our job well (laughs)!

BC

.

A game like "Medal of Honor" is more like a movie where you follow a character in his adventures and in good times as in bad times.

The music corresponds to pressure surges or heroic acts.

In "New World", it was about creating a soundscape so that the player is in total immersion in the middle of several characters.

What type of video game player are you?

RD.

I play all styles including shooting games and racing.

I also play Nintendo Switch with my kids.

We also played Call of Duty Black Ops a lot with Brandon before we had a family.

I have always loved relaxing with a video game since I was a child and it allows me to keep in touch with friends and family.
