During the “Crafts Discovery Tour”, 700 middle school students from the Weilheim-Schongau district found out about the current training opportunities in the region.

District

- Young people in the district should "go out with real added value", said the managing director of the district handicrafts association, Roland Streim, on the occasion of the "craft discovery tour", during which middle school students in the eighth and ninth grades from all over the district learn about the current training opportunities in the region. Twelve job profiles - from plant mechanics to carpenters - were presented in the training center of the Chamber of Crafts in Weilheim. According to Streim, the aim was to show the professional activity and the training realistically: “Handicrafts must be experienced.” In the workshops, the students had the opportunity to speak not only with trainers, but also with trainees who were almost the same age.

According to the master craftsman Michael Andrä, a realistic representation of the training is important.

A glossy brochure showing a carpenter standing on a roof in the sunshine says nothing about the job.

When students see how handicrafts work, they would be more likely to choose an apprenticeship.

"Not everyone has to study," says Andrä, "the universities are full and there are already enough dropouts."

Necessity of the handicraft: "Discovery tour" should be offered again

District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß also emphasizes the necessity of handicrafts.

According to the district administrator, it is the backbone of the region's economy.

The shortage of skilled workers is becoming more and more a problem for the economy, which is why platforms such as the “discovery tour” must be included in the program of schools and chambers of crafts.

In Weilheim, the event will definitely be offered again in the coming years.

Like Jochner-Weiß, Thomas Orbig from the “School-Business Working Group” sees a major problem in the shortage of skilled workers.

He reckons that there will be a “battle for talent” in companies.

According to Stefan Biesenberger, the opportunities in the handicraft are open to the top.

With further training to become a master craftsman or business economist, you can quickly become the boss of your own company, according to the deputy head of the training center of the Chamber of Crafts.

For Markus Nitsch, the head of the Weilheim employment agency, the prosperity of a society depends on the craft.

That is why a good education is important.

This also affects the payment.

The wages in the handicrafts would rise.

Nitsch considers events such as the “Discovery Tour” to be very important, because although some young people are already informed about various job profiles through their parents or friends, many others still have “no plan at all”.

Exact ideas about craft professions

Many students already had certain ideas about his craft, as baker David Grube discovered.

He was asked, among others, when bakers sleep when they work at night.

"Many bakers sleep twice, once after and once before work," says Grube.

"And in between we have a lot of free time."

A middle school student who had looked at metalworking on a CNC-controlled lathe as part of the “discovery tour” knew afterwards that she was not interested in this profession at all.

"But that is also an added value," says Roland Streim, "when you ultimately know which profession is out of the question for you."
