Hanover / Bremen - To combat illegal work and illegal employment, inspectors in Lower Saxony checked 597 companies and 1,540 people across the country. In 39 cases, craft activities were carried out without the required registration and in twelve cases a trade was pursued without the required registration, said a spokesman for the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics on Friday. In Hanover, the authorities forbade further work on two construction sites due to inadequate occupational safety. Employees of the municipalities, customs as well as trade supervisory authorities, immigration authorities and the police were involved in the controls from October 7th to 12th.

Customs continue to check in 107 cases whether the mandatory minimum wage has been paid and in 123 cases whether companies have not paid social security contributions or have not paid the correct amount.

There are also six possible cases of abuse of social benefits and 49 cases in which the right of residence may have been violated.

In addition, the customs officers identified 68 cases in which there is a suspicion of a violation of social security reporting regulations or identification requirements.

In Lower Saxony, the authorities inspect the construction industry in particular twice a year.

Controls against "autoposers": 450 officers on duty

Lower Saxony's police checked over 1,300 vehicles from the “car poser” scene, including their occupants, over the weekend - and pulled some of them out of circulation.

450 officers checked on the two days in the areas of responsibility of 26 police stations, as the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) announced on Monday.

31 criminal and 129 traffic offense reports were made, some of which involved drunk driving, but the officers also seized several knives, a blank gun and small amounts of heroin and marijuana.

During a day of action against illegal work, inspectors also checked six construction sites in the state of Bremen. They controlled a total of 28 people from 14 companies, a spokesman for the Senator for Finance announced on Friday. In six cases, the officials found indications of violations of the applicable regulations. One person was given a warning because they did not have ID with them. The focus of the controls on October 7 was in the construction industry. Employees of the main customs office in Bremen and local authorities were involved.

The results of the controls are now evaluated.

If the suspicion is confirmed, criminal and administrative offense proceedings are initiated and social benefits are reclaimed.

Since 2015 there have been campaign days twice a year to combat illegal employment and social benefit fraud as well as compliance with the minimum wage in the state of Bremen.

Due to Corona, the first day of action this year was canceled.
