China affirmed that all the legitimate measures and measures it is taking are aimed at protecting its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, and renewed its call on the United States to stop making "irresponsible" statements in this regard.
And Pentagon spokesman John Kirby recently claimed that China is stepping up "efforts to intimidate and pressure Taiwan through military activities in the East and South China Seas."
"The situation in the region is generally stable thanks to the joint efforts of China and neighboring countries in the South China Sea," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a press conference yesterday, commenting on Kirby's remarks. The one-China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the United States deliberately used relevant issues to stoke tension in the relations between countries in the region and send wrong and irresponsible signals to the outside world."
Zhao stressed that China's legitimate and reasonable measures are to safeguard its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, rights and interests, noting that US negative moves, including arms sales to Taiwan and strengthening official military relations with it, show the true face of Washington as an obstacle to regional peace and stability.
The spokesman called on the United States to "take China's position and concerns seriously, strictly abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiques, stop making irresponsible remarks on Taiwan and maritime issues, and do more to benefit China-US relations and regional peace and stability."
