The foundation stone was laid on Friday for the new area of the Görlitz Natural History Museum, which has been under construction since autumn 2020.
The Senckenberg campus "finally creates enough space for international research and the extensive natural history collections," said Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) according to the announcement.
The project is a "real enrichment for the Saxon museum landscape" and a further milestone on the way of the city to an important science location in Saxony and Germany.
Görlitz - Kretschmer thanked the federal government for its financial support “in this urgently needed” project.
By the end of 2023, renovated monuments and new buildings will be built into a modern building complex in the downtown district, which mainly dates back to the Wilhelminian era.
The collections, laboratories, workshops, seminar rooms and lecture halls, a publicly accessible library and administration will be brought together there under one roof.
This marks the beginning of a new era for nature research in Görlitz, said the general director of the Senckenberg Society, Klement Tockner.
The campus helps in the search for the “best minds” in the global science community ”.

The Senckenberg Museum für Naturkunde Görlitz goes back to the founding of the Ornithological Society in 1811.
In the GDR state research museum, it became a state museum in 1991 and an institute of the Society for Nature Research named after the Frankfurt doctor and founder Johann Christian Senckenberg (1707-1772).
It is part of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community.
