Keeping dogs is much more expensive in Freising.

Especially owners of fighting dogs will have to pay much more taxes in the future.

Freising

- Dog owners in the city of Freising will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the future.

The finance committee has adjusted the 15-year-old dog tax statute and increased the tax rates.

In particular, owners of fighting dogs belonging to category 1 or 2 have to reckon with drastically increased taxes for their four-legged friends according to the new statutes.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

The group of the Greens had requested that the increase in the fighting dog tax be examined.

Owners of fighting dogs of category 1 had to shell out 600 euros per year, owners of dogs of category 2 on presentation of a character test or a negative certificate 40 euros per year.

This has now been tightened significantly: the new taxes now amount to 1900 euros for category 1 dogs (for example pit bull terriers or bull terriers) and 450 euros for category 2 dogs - such as rottweilers.

Holders of all other types also have to pay more

But owners of all other types of dogs will also have to pay a little more after the statutes come into force: Instead of 40 euros for the first dog, it will be 60 euros in future, for the second dog it will no longer be 60, but 80 euros, the third and each additional dog will cost in future 100 instead of 80 euros.

As the administration explained, the city also has expenses related to dog ownership: For example, the 40 dog waste bag stations in the city area have to be refilled weekly by building yard employees.

For 2020/2021 alone, they have ordered 500,000 dog waste bags at a price of around 2400 euros.

Two more innovations added

In addition to the tax rates, other innovations have also been incorporated into the statutes: Previously, dogs that were taken in from state-approved animal shelters were exempt from tax for three years.

This regulation now only applies for twelve months.

Robert Weller's (FW) motion to leave it at 36 months was rejected with 4:10 votes.

In addition, the new statute enables the city to take legal action against dog owners who do not register their four-legged friends or who do not register them promptly for tax evasion.

The set of rules, with which tax rates are still below the rates of other comparable municipalities, was unanimously approved by the finance committee.

Now the city council has to agree.
