When one speaks of marionettes, one usually speaks of large figures that are pulled by strings and moved from above. But there are also very special techniques - such as attaching smaller figures to the back of the hand.

When one speaks of marionettes, one usually speaks of large figures that are pulled by strings and moved from above.

But there are also very special techniques - such as attaching smaller figures to the back of the hand.

Bad Tölz

- This highly complex technique was invented by the late Russian doll artist Wladimir Sacharov.

Albert Maly-Motta, one of the two directors of the Tölzer Marionette Theater, is completely enthusiastic about this technique of playing.

During the first Corona lockdown, the technology tinkerer immersed himself in this type of doll building and playing and built a figure called "Stauni", which, for example, thrilled the audience in videos of the Tölzer Marionette Theater during the pandemic.

It is now a concern of Maly-Motta to make the building and playing art of Wladimir Sacharov and his special hand puppets known to a wider audience.

That is why he invites you to a film evening in the Tölzer Theater on Saturday, October 16.

The guest is the Swabian journalist Ramona Gastl, who has visited Sacharov several times in recent years and shot a film in his workshop in Siberia.

The film “Illusia” - it is not quite finished yet - will be shown in excerpts that evening.

Characters are complex to play

In a casual talk, Maly-Motta will talk to Gastl and talk about the special playing technique. Visitors can also look at the figure “Lica” (spoken: “Lisa”, it means “fox”). Playing such a figure takes some practice: it sits on the back of the hand, with the index and middle fingers stuck in the pant legs. The movements of arms and head are controlled by a tiny crosshair. "It is a masterpiece to incorporate such a technique into the mandarin-sized head," says Maly-Motta from personal experience. But it is "great" that you can control the figure's hands and fingers: "For example, it can grip."

The theater director is currently working on more characters for the Tölz venue and hopes that his own interest will find fertile ground here.

“Wladimir Sacharov's technology is unique in the world.

Something like that shouldn't be forgotten, ”says the Tölzer.

The Russian, actually a robot technician, was killed in a fire in his workshop in 2019.

"Thank God the figures could be saved."

The film and discussion evening will take place on Saturday, October 16, at 7.30 p.m. in the Tölzer Marionettentheater.
