Human rights violations at the borders of the EU: And if you don't stay outside, we legitimize violence

2021-10-15T16:21:51.261Z

Behind the brutal pushbacks on the Croatian border is a system that all EU states approve. What helps against the creeping acceptance of human rights violations at our borders?

Concern!

Indignation!

Shock!

When it comes to media-effective reactions to human rights violations on Europe's borders, affected politicians like to use the entire gamut of disapproving emotions.

On the other hand, when it comes to concrete measures to remedy the well-known grievances, the statements sound more like lonely recorder tones in the backyard.

Nobody wants to hear that, nobody seriously wants to hinder the system, whose illegality benefits all EU countries.

"Both in Greece and Croatia, the pushbacks are organized according to the general staff," reports SPIEGEL reporter Steffen Lüdke, "and our research suggests that the orders come from the highest political level." Together with Maximilian Popp, deputy head of the SPIEGEL foreign department, Steffen dissects the EU's bigoted refugee policy in this episode of "Eight Billion".

"What is happening here is organized crime at the European external borders," says Maximilian Popp, "Crime is part of European migration policy in 2021".

A crime financed by every taxpayer in the EU.

Steffen Lüdke, Maximilian Popp and Gyde Jensen (FDP), the chairwoman of the Bundestag human rights committee, will discuss who benefits from why it is so dangerous for Europe to ultimately accept these crimes and how the future federal government could require a meaningful migration policy in Europe in this podcast episode.
