By presenting its draft finance bill to the Congress of Deputies, the executive was all smiles last Wednesday.
First, because this 2022 budget is expansive.
Spending increased 0.6%, from 456 to almost 459 billion euros, a record.
The increase in public investment is more spectacular, by nearly 10%, reaching 40 billion euros, in particular thanks to European funds, which have injected 27.6 billion euros, 1 billion more than in 2021.
The other factor of government satisfaction is political: the ruling coalition, formed by the Socialist Party (PSOE) and Unidas Podemos (radical left), a minority in Parliament, is hopeful of having its accounts validated by the Lower House before the end of the year by winning the support of its traditional allies: small left-wing parties, Catalan and Basque regional formations.
