Along with Caspar David Friedrich, Blechen was one of the most important German landscape painters of the early 19th century.
"Atmospheric works, dramatic lighting and bright colors shape his work," it says in a press release.
Liebermann, for example, spoke of Blechen's ability to paint subjective perception into a naturalistic picture.
For the most important German impressionist Liebermann, Blechen was a pioneer of impressionism.
"Liebermann saw himself as an artistic successor to Blechen and owned at least five Blechen landscapes in his private collection," said Lucy Wasensteiner, director of the Liebermann villa.
In addition to oil studies from Blechen's trip to Italy, the exhibition also shows a selection of early and late works.
