The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned that any deployment of US military bases in Central Asia could expose its countries to retaliatory attacks by the Taliban.
We consider the pressure being exerted on our allies in Central Asia for the purpose of establishing military and intelligence bases under the pretext of anti-terrorist activities very dangerous, Director of the Third Department of the CIS countries in the Ministry Alexander Sternnik said during today's speech at the 13th Congress of the Russian Society for International Studies reported by Sputnik.
"Washington's hiding behind the Central Asian countries will expose them to retaliatory strikes by the Taliban or extremist organizations, and the movement will have sufficient resources to target them in the region as they threaten Tajikistan in general," he added.
He pointed out that the risks of deploying foreign military bases in Central Asia would outweigh any benefits and would put an end to large infrastructure projects in Afghanistan.
