The Chief Inspector of the First Team of the East Kowloon Region Crime Squad, Lau Ho-teh, said that after further investigation, a 49-year-old was arrested in Wong Tai Sin District this morning on charges of arson, criminal damage and insult to the national flag after analyzing a large number of closed-circuit television and information provided by the public. The man surnamed Lu was detained for investigation. The suspect reported that he was unemployed, and no objects suspected of violating the National Security Law were found in his residence. He is suspected to be related to the aforementioned national flag damage case.

The other man involved in the case, about 30 years old, is suspected of committing the crime at the same time as the arrested person and is being wanted.

The police said the investigation revealed that the two knew each other and committed crimes together.

According to the latest amendment to the National Flag and National Emblem (Amendment) Bill 2021, anyone who publicly and deliberately burns, damages, defaces, defiles, tramples on the national flag, the national emblem or its images or otherwise insults the national flag or The National Emblem is a crime. Once convicted, the maximum penalty is a fine of HK$50,000 and imprisonment for 3 years.
