Amsterdam - So far, only one special corona drug has been approved in the European Union.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has now started testing a new drug against the coronavirus.

The Swedish-British manufacturer Astrazeneca, which has already developed a corona vaccine, has developed the combination preparation Evusheld.

The drug is said to prevent illness with Covid-19 in adults.

The EMA announced this on Thursday in Amsterdam.

Initial test results indicated that the agent was effective in protecting against the disease.

On Monday, Astrazeneca announced that studies with Evusheld had shown "positive results".

The company noted a "statistically significant reduction in severe Covid-19 cases and deaths" in patients with mild to moderate symptoms who received the drug.

903 people took part in the studies.

90 percent of the subjects were considered high-risk patients.

Data from tests are now continuously evaluated in order to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the preparation against each other. It is not known when a final result will be available. According to the EMA, the manufacturer Astrazeneca has not yet submitted an application for approval on the European market for the drug, which consists of the active ingredients tixagevimab and cilgavimab.

So far, only the drug Remdesivir has been approved as a special corona drug in the EU.

However, several pharmaceutical manufacturers are working on the development of drugs to alleviate the course of Covid-19.

On Monday, the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche applied to the EMA for testing of its corona drug Ronapreve.

The EMA had previously stated that it may soon begin testing a corona drug developed by the US manufacturer Merck & Co.
