However, the celebratory welcome for freshmen must be done online.

Rostock - Under pandemic conditions, the freshmen of the University of Rostock were greeted with a ceremony on Friday. Contrary to tradition, Rector Wolfgang Schareck, Education Minister Bettina Martin (SPD), Lord Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen (non-party) as well as deans of the faculties and representatives of the Academic Senate and the Council did not move through the city to the Marienkirche. Instead, there was only a short walk from the main university building to the university church. The celebration could be followed online.

In the summer and winter semesters, according to the information, almost 3500 are enrolled in the first semester, 1654 of them come from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "We are pleased that we are finally starting a semester with a lot of face-to-face teaching," said Schareck. The university can once again become a place of intensive encounters, where courses can be experienced together on site.

Minister Martin emphasized the importance of face-to-face encounters that make up a degree.

The corona pandemic led to students in their third semester who had never seen their university or college from the inside.

Even if the universities had done a lot to master this situation with a wealth of ideas and commitment in the best possible way for all those involved, it was an enormous challenge for everyone - but especially for the freshmen.
