Hamburg - The Hamburg Senate expects the ITS mobility congress to provide impetus for a sustainable improvement in traffic in the Hanseatic city. "We aim to continue many of the projects started by Hamburg beyond the duration of the congress and, for example, to use the digitalization of the S-Bahn permanently to improve local public transport in Hamburg," said Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) on Friday , the last day of the fair, according to the announcement.

Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens) said that many of the projects presented at the ITS Congress would "sustainably improve people's mobility over many years". As an example, he cited the world premiere of a highly automated, autonomously driving S-Bahn at the beginning of the congress, which received nationwide attention. Digitally controlled S-Bahn trains allow a significantly higher capacity in the existing rail network and reduce energy consumption. In the coming years, the entire S-Bahn network in Hamburg is to be converted to the "digital rail", and in the long term, all regional and long-distance rail services.

From the point of view of the environmental association Nabu, however, the congress concentrated very much on technology and neglected the political debate about a mobility transition. "The mere display of technical possibilities is not a solution in itself, but in some cases even an additional problem," said Hamburg-based Nabu chairman Malte Siegert. "Because without a feasible vision of urban development and without a clear idea of how it will be implemented in real life, all the technical offers may run counter to resource and environmental protection or traffic calming in the city."

As long as the number of private cars does not shrink, car sharing offers do not serve their purpose, criticized the Nabu.

All new forms of transport should really replace motorized individual transport.

“Even if cars become cleaner and quieter overall, the space required for individual transport in a growing city will have to decrease.” Around 806,000 cars are already registered in Hamburg, and the population of Germany's second largest city will move in the coming years towards the 2 million mark.
