After a storm hit him, the Kirchheim boys had to put down their maypole.

An artist now turns them into sculptures that are auctioned for a good cause.

Kirchheim

- The blue steel structure on Kirchheimer Dorfplatz is orphaned. The maypole that she is supposed to hold has not been standing for a long time. Irreparable storm damage. And the stump that last reminded of the white and blue wooden giant has now also disappeared. But only temporarily. The Kirchheim artist Roman Hummitzsch and his chainsaw are currently making several sculptures out of the remains that will soon adorn the town center.

The storm "Sabine" had really hit the maypole.

Since its stability was no longer guaranteed, the fire brigade had to kill it in February 2020.

The lower part remained in the anchorage - as a souvenir until a new maypole is erected in 2022.

"That's what we fought for," says Mario Neumeyer, chairman of the Kirchheim boys' association.

"A little surprise has to stay"

The sawn-off trunk was not burned, actually the maypole was supposed to be sold in slices at the village festival for a good cause. Now it turned out quite differently. The boys' association came up with a new idea of creating something artistic out of the maypole stump and turned to artist Hummitzsch, the initiator of the KunstRaum Kirchheim association. And so the idea of a “maypole upcycling” was born. In other words: don't throw it away or sell it, but make something even nicer out of it. The boys didn't have to negotiate long with Hummitzsch. "It is a friendship service between the associations in the community and the task interested me as an artist and sculptor very much," says Roman Hummitzsch.

What does the artist do with the maypole?

He doesn't want to reveal that.

“A bit of a surprise must remain with regard to the depiction of the maypole sculptures,” explains Hummitzsch on request.

One thing is certain: “The pieces will be unique.” The boys' association is planning to put the maypole works of art on the village square in winter - and to auction them on May 1st for charitable purposes.

Then when the new maypole is erected.
