The house martin is at home everywhere in Rhineland-Palatinate.

It likes to breed on the rough plastered exterior walls of buildings with protruding eaves.

With an estimated up to 62,000 breeding pairs, it is the most common species of swallow in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Because homeowners often do not tolerate swallow nests and because the clay and mud deposits that are important for nest building decrease with increasing surface sealing, the population is declining.

The wheatear loves open terrain and stone walls in vineyards, but with only 150 to 200 breeding pairs left in Rhineland-Palatinate, it is threatened with extinction.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, it only occurs in Rheinhessen and the Vorderpfalz.

The hoopoe is even rarer with only 70 to 80 breeding pairs in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The warmth-loving woodpecker bird with its long beak and orange-colored crown feathers has its northern limit of distribution in Germany.

He is dependent on loosened meadow and bush landscapes such as in the nature reserve "Mainzer Sand".

The special biotopes of this dune landscape are cut through by the motorway 643, conservationists hope to be able to stop the decided expansion of the motorway.

The tree sparrow is still represented in Rhineland-Palatinate with up to 23,000 breeding pairs, but has been declining since the mid-1980s and is listed as endangered in the Red List.

The species is dependent on orchards and tree-lined gardens.

According to Nabu, the colt need “more hedges to hide”.

The finch songbird is present in Rhineland-Palatinate with up to 15,000 breeding pairs.

The species is widespread, with a focus on the wine-growing regions of Rheinhessen and Nahe.

More than 455,000 people took part in the first public vote for “Bird of the Year” last year.

There are a total of 307 bird species in Germany.

The Nabu selected three migratory birds - house martin, wheatear and hoopoe - and thus species that suffer particularly badly from climate change, "because they depend on intact conditions in several parts of the world".
