"Where shall we go?": Last Saturday in Givat Amal | Israel today

Residents of the Tel Aviv neighborhood, who are due to vacate their homes this week in favor of luxury towers, are in pain: "Smear us, but we will fight to the end" • The municipality fears violence

This week, at least according to the original plan, the final phase of the evacuation of the Givat Amal neighborhood in Tel Aviv is scheduled to begin.

These are the last 45 families left on the land, and in the next two weeks, unless another directive arrives from the Knesset of Israel, they will all be evacuated on the way to another high-rise construction that already characterizes the area and the surrounding area.

The residents, whom we met on Friday, understand that for them it is the beginning of the end, only none of them is willing to commit whether it will be a sad or happy ending. "I am ready to do anything, I warn everyone that I want to do something that will shock the country, the whole country will talk about what will happen to me the day we are evacuated," says 80-year-old Rachel Levy, bursting into tears. "This is my house, I came here in 1947, where do they want me to go? Do they think that when the YSM will come I will just get up and go? I prefer to shock the country because there is nothing to lose anymore. "

The current part of the evacuation was done following the sale of the rights of the Tel Aviv Municipality in the land in favor of the construction of 120 luxury apartments.

Out of seven towers and a large park to be built, two buildings will be owned by the municipality.

The first high-rise was built two years ago, by Yitzhak Tshuva, and is already inhabited.

Next to it stands another building in the final stages of construction that Tshuva sold to the Hajj and Yigal Damari brothers.

The total value of the profits of all the developers in the Givat Amal area is worth at least three billion shekels, and with the completion of the vacancy, the construction of the last part will begin.

Knesset alongside the residents

Now, the question of compensation remains open.

Last week, MKs from both ends of the political spectrum - from Meski Lasky from Meretz to Ayelet Shaked on the right side of the political map - asked to stop the process until proper compensation is determined for the residents.

In doing so, the Knesset expressed a different position from that of the Tel Aviv Municipality.

Will this help change the decision and the evacuation?

"Everyone smeared us with answers. Ron Huldai, Dudi Amsalem, Aryeh Deri, Yitzhak Tshuva. Work on our eyes and smear us with answers," explains Yossi Cohen, a local resident, "but I do not say desperate. We will fight to the end and we want our compensation. "Let it be fair and ensure that the little we still have left to live on, we can do with dignity and not as the wretched poor that the state has abandoned and become invaders."

"Something needs to be understood," explains Ronit Aldubi, from the younger generation of the neighborhood, who tries to mediate between the struggle of the older generation and the tic-tac-toe generation. "Recognition and understanding come through economic compensation. "Enough for them to buy an apartment. Look at the agreement that the residents of Givat Amal A. made with Alfred Akirov at the time. It was simple, it was understandable and in our opinion it was also fair. Why is it impossible even this time for it to be fair?"

The Tel Aviv Municipality mentions at all times that everything is done according to the law and makes it clear that every tenant will receive the compensation he deserves.

In the background, everyone remembers the evacuation in the neighborhood in 2014, when the clashes with the police forces were violent and included the attack on then-MK Ilan Gal-On.

This time they are afraid that the events may become much more violent and difficult, unless in the Knesset of Israel someone succeeds in performing the miracle that the residents here expect.
