The whole of Germany was in turmoil when eight-year-old Julia went missing on Cerchov Mountain earlier this week.

Hundreds of German and Czech emergency services had looked for the girl, who was only found by a Czech forester two days later.

Kathrin Baier from Peitinger and Maya from the rescue dog team of the BRK district association Weilheim-Schongau were also involved in the search.

Was that your first assignment with the rescue dog squad for which you had to travel so far?

I've been with the rescue dog team for six years now and have now been deployed 25 times.

But first I was further away: a few years ago in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm.

The typical journey to us is about an hour.

When you and your search dog were called in, everything had to be done very quickly.

How did that go?

The control center of the BRK Oberland contacted me on Monday afternoon on my cell phone.

I was still at work then.

I left Peiting at around 5 p.m. with two colleagues from the relay, and we were there at around 8 p.m.

Two others from our group have already been there.

I am very grateful to my employer that I was able to leave for my honorary position so quickly, that is not a matter of course.

Mainly because we are a small team.

You can tell immediately when you are lacking strength.

Where do you work full-time?

I am a medical assistant at Dr.

Kusche and Dr.

Griener in Peiting.

So you set off straight away.

How was the process in the operational area?

We met with the operations management directly at the border.

You first had to register so that it was clear who was there and for how long.

Then it went to the "operations management dog", which was in consultation with the other rescue workers such as the police and coordinated everything.

And then it went into the search area on its own.

There were three dog handlers and two helpers from our team.

How did your dog Maya react to the other search dogs?

Did you first have to "sniff" yourself?

A total of about 115 dogs were used.

But they had no contact with each other.

The dogs stay in the car the whole time - except for pissing, of course, after the long journey.

However, they are only really let out in the search area and there they hardly come into contact with the other dogs.

Do you think Maya was as exciting as it was for you?

In any case.

My dog was instantly in her element.

The dogs are really happy when they are allowed to work, even if it is of course very exhausting for them.

Maya spent an hour and a half searching, which is a lot of physical effort.

Especially for the nose.

What role did the search dogs play in finding little Julia?

A big one: the dogs indicated the correct search direction.

There were person detection dogs and area detection dogs in use.

The person detection dogs look specifically for a scent trail on the leash if, for example, they have been given a scarf of the missing person to smell.

Maya is an area tracking dog who searches without a leash.

In such an extensive area as this time, the area detection dogs were important because they can limit the search radius.

How long have you been on the road in total?

We were there until about 1.30 a.m., at home I was around 5 a.m.

And at 9 o'clock I was back in my main job.

Of course I would have liked to help with the search, but it didn't work because of the work.

And you need a break once in a while.

Fortunately there were enough other dogs on site, that gives you a better feeling.

A pretty exciting night.

How did you react when the girl was found again?

Tuesday lunchtime a friend from the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen rescue dog team told me the good news.

And a little later it was in the media.

I was so relieved!

After all, it was pitch dark and wet and cold there.

An eight year old girl all alone in these conditions - terrible!

You don't even want to imagine how the child and her family must have felt there.

When I found out about the find, a lot of emotional pressure disappeared.

It was a huge relief.
