Recently, when the red flag was hoisted in Big Wave Bay, a surfer was pushed to the reef by the swell and required rescue by a lifeguard. The lifeguard was also slightly injured.

Today (16th) Big Wave Bay Beach also hoisted the red flag due to big waves, but there are still many people surfing.

The Hong Kong and Kowloon Lifesaving Staff Association stated that there were at least three accidents at Big Wave Bay Beach today. Two of them involved swimmers who were caught in the back beach by huge waves during surfing and needed lifeguards to climb rocks to rescue them.

Hu Qirong, a spokesman for the trade union, said that the red flag on the beach is dangerous and it is not suitable for water activities. He described it as "fighting with nature and nothing to fight against if you still fall into the water when the red flag is hoisted."

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced this morning that due to large waves, red flags have been hoisted at Big Wave Bay and other beaches, indicating that swimming there is dangerous and reminding the public not to swim there.

However, when a reporter from "Hong Kong 01" went to Big Wave Bay Beach today, they found that many people still fell into the water and surfed; regardless of shallow or deep water, there were surfers everywhere. There were also children playing and surfing in shallow water.

The Hong Kong and Kowloon Life Saving Staff Association announced in the evening that two of the accidents at Big Wave Bay Beach today involved surfers, including a middle-aged man who was involved in a huge wave while surfing at about 9.45 am On the beach, due to the rapid current, the lifeguard needed to be rescued by rock climbing by land. The man had abraded hands and feet and did not need to be sent to hospital.

In the other case, at about 4:30 pm, multiple surfers were also involved in the back beach. Lifeguards were required to perform underwater and rock climbing rescue at the same time. The relevant surfers had damaged hands and feet and did not need to be sent to hospital.

Another accident occurred at about 11 am. A child was swept out of the sea center by the sea just outside the No. 2 observation deck due to an undercurrent. The lifeguard immediately brought fins and a life-saving buoy to rescue him.

Hu Qirong said that during big waves, surfing may be pushed by swells and undercurrents to the reef and be injured.

If a lifeguard rescues the injured in a big wave, it is also dangerous. "It's all about fighting for life." Therefore, he urged the public not to engage in water activities when the red flag is hoisted.
