Over the past year, there has been a decrease in the number of Bedouin youths enlisting in the IDF and an increase in the number of soldiers dropping out, say IDF and ground forces in the IDF. Extremists in Arab society titled "Al-Aqsa in Danger," as well as following Operation Wall Guard and the riots in the cities involved in May.

In an explicit order from Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, an in-depth investigation was conducted into the phenomenon, and dozens of posts were found that published Bedouins who identified themselves as IDF soldiers and called for them to stop serving in the army or announce their retirement.

The investigation revealed that in some cases photos of Bedouin soldiers were used without their permission, in other cases they were soldiers who finished their service a few years ago and in more than ten cases they were Bedouin soldiers, most living in the north and one in Rahat, who uploaded the posts themselves.

They were asked to remove the posts from the social networks.

Also, during home visits, commanders heard of extreme cases in which inciting elements in Israeli society published the soldiers' addresses through screenshots of the "Wise" app, and even called on the public to harm the soldiers and their families.

In some cases, complaints were lodged with the defense establishment.

But the reality above the surface is much more severe.

During "Wall Guard", for the first time, Bedouin youths began blocking hinges and throwing stones at vehicles on a nationalist background, encouraged by the wild incitement in the networks.

Sources in the IDF said that this is a "very worrying distance from Israeli society."

Another factor that distances the Bedouin from general society is that they generally choose to study at universities and colleges in Judea and Samaria and not in Israel - mainly due to Hebrew gaps, as they do not learn the language. In some cases, they also have family members in Judea and Samaria and the Gaza Strip.

Expands the incitement campaign.

According to data obtained by Walla !, 1,514 soldiers from the Bedouin community currently serve in the IDF, including 84 officers: one officer with the rank of colonel and ten with the rank of lieutenant general.

In 2016, the volume of recruitment was low and hovered around 339 soldiers, when a year later an increase began and 448 Bedouins enlisted in the IDF, and since then there have been moderate increases and decreases, until in 2020 there was another increase with the recruitment of 606 soldiers. , In 2021 there was another decline, which can not yet be summed up at this stage.

On the other hand, among Christian Arabs there is a positive and rising mobilization trend, but it is still a double-digit number every year.

In terms of the number of Bedouin soldiers dropping out, in 2018 it was around 31%, in 2019 30% dropped out and in 2020 23% of the soldiers dropped out. However, compared with the overall dropout rate of 13% among men in the army in 2018, 15% in 2019 and 12% in 2020. Now in 2021 there has been an increase in dropout rates.

In order to encourage recruitment to the IDF and dealing with dropouts from military service, senior officials toured In the Personnel Division in recent months in Bedouin society and met with reserve officers and dignitaries of the community, and also heard harsh criticism from them. Senior officials in the Bedouin community claim that the IDF is not determined in 2021 to recruit Bedouins to the IDF and not only in the trades or combat professions but in combat and other professions such as electronics, computers and medicine. They also criticized the treatment gaps between the discharged soldiers.

One source told IDF officers that he would like to see outstanding officers who come to the schools and encourage enlistment, and not send officials who do not set a personal example. Acha because not all Bedouin are suitable for permanent service, so it is advisable to prepare them back for citizenship with an appropriate profession and support for long-term benefits.
