The Junge Union's Germany Day is all about the historic setback for the CDU and CSU in the federal elections.

Before the candidate for chancellor appears before the party youth, clear words have already been said about the state of the Union.

Münster - CDU leader Armin Laschet faces the party youngsters just three weeks after the disastrous performance of the Union in the federal election this Saturday. At the German Day of the Junge Union (JU) in Münster, the focus is on the renewal of the CDU in terms of personnel and content. Union Chancellor candidate Laschet had announced after the all-time low of only 24.1 percent for the CDU / CSU that they would postpone their own ambitions - the entire CDU federal executive board is to be re-elected at a special party conference.

Health Minister Jens Spahn will also speak in Münster and take a position in a discussion. The eagerly awaited meeting between Laschet and CSU boss Markus Söder is canceled. Instead, Söder would take part in a basic conference of the CSU, it said at short notice on Thursday from Munich. The CSU chairman was inferior to Laschet in the power struggle for the Union's candidacy for chancellor, his cross shots against Laschet had triggered criticism.

At the start of Germany Day on Friday, the CDU politician Friedrich Merz painted a dramatic picture of the Union after its electoral defeat.

He described the Union as a "serious restructuring case at risk of insolvency".

The former Union parliamentary group leader called on his party not to focus on personnel issues, but on the content.

"We should only deal with the question of how do we get out of there?"

Merz is being traded as a possible candidate for Laschet's successor - as are Health Minister Jens Spahn and Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus, who are also expected at the three-day JU meeting in Münster.

JU boss Tilman Kuban said: “We have to show our colors clearly.

We lost the election, and that's why it goes into the opposition. ”The Union has recently behaved like a hen.

“That's why the ball is now in the SPD's playing field.” He congratulated the Social Democratic Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz on winning the election.

According to Kuban's wish, the Germany Day should send out a “clear signal of departure”.

The election campaign must be clearly dealt with.

"We have to go ahead with new heads, a new program and a new cohesion between the CDU and CSU," said Kuban.

The JU top is in favor of a member survey when looking for a new CDU party chairman if there are several candidates. The JU federal executive committee wants to put a corresponding demand to the vote at Germany day. Many CDU regional associations are pressing for greater grassroots participation in the search for a new party leadership. The way in which the grassroots should be included is, however, controversial in the party as a whole. Some regional associations are skeptical about the instrument of the member survey.

Laschet has announced that he wants to moderate the content and personnel realignment of the party at the federal level.

There is to be a meeting of the district chairpersons on October 30th to listen to the membership.

Three days later, the Presidium and the Federal Executive Committee will decide how the base will be specifically integrated into the planned renewal.

It remains to be seen whether the party congress will take place in December or, if possible, in January.
