LIVE - Assassination of Samuel Paty: "We have been far too silent on secularism in recent decades", according to Blanquer

For showing Charlie Hebdo drawings to his students, Samuel Paty was killed by an Islamist on October 16, 2020, in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. Tributes are paid to him throughout this Saturday.


The day of tribute will begin with a ceremony organized at 10 am by the town of Eragny-sur-Oise, where Samuel Paty lived, in the presence of relatives, friends, neighbors and residents, gathered at the gymnasium of the Butte. A fresco in honor of the teacher will be unveiled there. At the same time, another ceremony will be held at the Ministry of National Education, rue de Grenelle in Paris, in the presence of Jean-Michel Blanquer and Prime Minister Jean Castex. The latter will meet with the family of Samuel Paty, before unveiling a plaque in his memory and delivering a speech.

A third ceremony will take place in the afternoon at the Collège du Bois-d'Aulne in Conflans, where Samuel Paty taught.

The family of the history and geography teacher will be surrounded by Jean-Michel Blanquer, representatives of the ministry and the Academy of Versailles, trade unions, parents' associations and members of the college teams. .

Speeches, poetry readings and slams will punctuate this event.

A procession will then form to join the Place de la Liberté.

Finally, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron will receive the parents of Samuel Paty at the Elysee Palace for a meeting in the afternoon.

At the end of the day, the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo will rename the square Paul-Painlevé, opposite the Sorbonne, in square Samuel Paty.
