Tegernsee - The 18th International Mountain Film Festival in Tegernsee got off to a successful start - despite Corona conditions.

Because of the ongoing corona pandemic, just 60 visitors were admitted to the baroque hall of the castle, which usually holds 250 participants, for the opening of the 18th Tegernsee International Mountain Film Festival - but at least.

“We just don't want to take any risks,” said Mayor Johannes Hagn in his welcoming address, which is why the entrance controls were strict.

Festival director Michael Pause was pleased that the mountain film genre got through the Corona forced break.

252 productions from 38 countries were registered for the Tegernsee Mountain Film Festival - more than ever before.

This year the audience can choose from 94 films from all over the world at 40 screenings at various Tegernsee locations.

For the first time, the jury was not personally introduced at the opening.

Because of the pandemic, every single one of them rated the 35 shortlisted films at home for themselves.

Conquered K2 without bottled oxygen

The focus of the approximately three-hour opening evening was the 65-minute film "K2 - The Impossible Descent" - in German: the impossible descent - by Slawomir Batyra.

"A real Red Bull hammer", as Michael Pause announced.

The film reports on how Andrzej Bargiel, who grew up with eleven siblings in Poland, first conquered the legendary K2 in the Himalayas in 2018 without bottled oxygen and then dared the risky descent from the summit to the base camp.

"A show of strength that demands superhuman physical and mental strength," summed up guest of honor Michael Veith, who, as vice world champion in the 1978 downhill run in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, remembered his wild times on the dreaded downhill run from the notorious Streif.

Short film with a serious background

At the beginning of the evening, the ten-minute film "Lock Down Rock Up" was shown.

“Liberator in the rock” was the name of the 26-minute poetic strip that followed.

At the end, the visitors enjoyed themselves with the strip “Am Gipfel”, a short film with a serious background.

The visitors found a successful start.
