Today, NASA announced the launch of the first mission of its kind to study Trojan asteroids around Jupiter.
Trojan asteroids are two large groups of space rocks that scientists believe are leftovers of basic materials from which the outer planets of the solar system formed.
According to a NASA statement, the Lucy space probe, which is housed in a special cargo capsule, is scheduled to be launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida aboard the Atlas rocket, as part of a joint project between Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
According to the plan, "Lucy" will remain in space on a 12-year mission to study a record number of asteroids believed to be rich in carbon and may provide new explanations about the origins of organic matter and life on Earth.
