Magdeburg - The number of members in the shooting clubs of Saxony-Anhalt has continued to rise despite the corona pandemic.

"The Landesschützenverband has had a steady increase in membership for six years," said a spokesman for the association.

The number of members is currently around 19,700 in around 450 shooting clubs.

In 2014 there were around 18,000 members.

The clubs are particularly strong in rural areas and especially in the Harz Mountains, the spokesman said.

DLRG: Significantly fewer bathing deaths in Bavaria

In Bavaria, the number of fatal swimming accidents fell sharply by the end of the summer.

Nevertheless, the Free State is by far the state with the most bathing deaths.

This comes from the figures of the German Life Rescue Society (DLRG), which were published on Thursday.

The state association, together with the Saxon shooters, was an exception nationwide last year. "Apparently the clubs have enough attraction," said the spokesman, explaining the development. In the clubs, the members find not only the sporting aspect but also the maintenance of traditions and customs as well as socializing. In the other regional associations in Germany, however, there was no increase in membership, the spokesman reported. According to the German Shooting Association, there are around 1.3 million members nationwide.

According to the spokesman, the proportion of shooters up to the age of 20 is currently relatively low at seven percent, but has developed positively in recent years.

"Half of all association members are 56 years of age and older, and every fifth member is female," he continued.

These numbers have remained largely stable recently.

According to the association spokesman, the pandemic has partially paralyzed the club life of the shooters.

“In addition to the majority of the shooting festivals, there were also many general meetings and other club events.” Due to the restrictions, the state association ultimately canceled almost all state championships in 2020 and, as a prophylactic measure, did not hold any title fights at state level this year.
