Suhl's Lord Mayor André Knapp thanked the controversial ex-Federal Constitutional Protection President Hans-Georg Maaßen (both CDU) for his commitment in his candidacy for the Bundestag.
"I had to take back my initial skepticism," said Knapp in a greeting on Saturday at the state party conference of the Thuringian CDU in Suhl.
Maassen spared no effort and time to make himself known in the region.
Suhl - It was clear that a person like Maaßen was polarizing.
He would like the party to “spread its wings wide” - from the conservative to the social-liberal currents.
Maaßen had run for the CDU in the Bundestag election in 1966 in the South Thuringian constituency, but lost significantly to the biathlon Olympic champion and SPD politician Frank Ullrich.
He then announced that he would like to continue to get involved politically in southern Thuringia for the CDU.
