Munich

- Bavaria's Minister of Health Klaus Holetschek (CSU *), who is currently the chairman of the Conference of Health Ministers, sharply criticized the current situation in geriatric and nursing care in Germany in an interview.

He

told

the

editorial network Germany (RND)

on Saturday that “we are currently running into a humanitarian catastrophe with our eyesight.” According to Holetschek, the main reason for this is that billing methods are put first, but nobody cares about people anymore.

"So far, to be honest, health policy has primarily been a topic for finance ministers - we have to change that," said Holetschek.

Nursing emergency in Germany: Health Minister Holetschek with an urgent appeal

Care in Germany is at the limit, mainly due to a lack of staff and difficult working conditions.

One has to become clearer in society about how much care is worth - and then take more money into hand.

According to Holetschek, illness and care are topics that everyone will have to deal with sooner or later - "at home or in an old people's home."

With his statements, the Bavarian Health Minister also supports the demands of the German Nursing Council, which on Wednesday (October 13th) called for a starting salary of 4,000 euros gross per month for nurses in all areas.

Its chairman, Christine Vogler, spoke about a social impact with regard to the shortage of staff in the nursing professions, which is equivalent to the climate catastrophe.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn also supported the demand, but referred to the responsibility of the social partners.

Bavarian Minister of Health wants to set up a "Springer Pool" for staff shortages in nursing

For Holetschek, however, payment alone is not the key to the solution, because for many nursing staff, predictability is also an important factor. Many are repeatedly taken out of their free time because there is a shortage in the wards and in the homes. “That can't be,” says Holetschek. He suggested so-called springer pools, whose employees would be available in the event of staff failures. Overall, “a whole range of measures is needed,” says Holetschek.

To what extent the nursing emergency will play a role in the explorations of the new coalition partners SPD, FDP and Greens * is not yet known.

The only thing that is certain is that after the federal election and the likely departure of the CDU * from the government coalition, Jens Spahn will be replaced in his post as health minister.

It remains to be seen whether his successor will take the necessary measures according to Holetschek as soon as possible.
