Six games not a threesome and now the first bankruptcy of a VfL team against the Iron.

Berlin - 1. FC Union Berlin has dealt the next setback for coach Mark van Bommel's team with its first victory over VfL Wolfsburg.

Lower Saxony, who started the season so well, lost 2-0 (0-0) in the An der Alten Försterei stadium on Saturday and have now been without a win for six competitive games.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored the goals in front of 11,006 spectators after fine preparatory work by former Wolfsburg Max Kruse in the 49th minute and Joker Sheraldo Becker (83rd).

HSV clearly loses a test match at VfL Wolfsburg 1: 4

Second division soccer club Hamburger SV has clearly lost a test match at the higher-class VfL Wolfsburg.

With 1: 4 (0: 3) the Hanseatic League had to admit defeat to the superior Bundesliga club on Wednesday afternoon in the VW city after a disappointing performance, especially in the first half.

HSV made too many individual mistakes and deservedly lost.

In the table, the Wolfsburg had to let the iron pass them. Thanks to the success in the 21st home game without defeat in a row, Union initially settled in the upper third of the table and celebrated with the third win in a row a perfect preparation for the game in the Conference League next Thursday at Feyenoord Rotterdam. In contrast to the guests who have to compete in the Champions League at RB Salzburg on Wednesday and whose strategy did not work in Köpenick either.

Put Union under pressure early on and prevent the game forward and above all on and over Kruse - this was what the first minutes looked like. And that worked at least in such a way that Union initially rarely came into play dangerously in front of the VfL goal and Kruse did not even come into play at first. In return, Andreas Luthe collected plenty of ball contacts at the beginning. Again and again his people in front were looking for the Union keeper and fitted back in the absence of offensive opportunities and offers.

He could not distinguish himself with parades, just as little as his counterpart Koen Casteels.

There were simply no chances, both teams worked too hard in defense.

Except once, when the Berliners let the guests come for an opportunity that Dodi Lukebakio, on loan from Hertha BSC, did not take advantage of.

After a fine cross pass from Lukas Nmecha, Lukebakio didn't hit the goal, only the post from a very short distance.

Would Wout Weghorst have done it?

Like national player Ridle Baku, the Dutchman first had to watch the action from the bench.

This hadn't happened to Weghorst for a long time, most recently on September 27, 2020. And so he helplessly witnessed what happened what van Bommel wanted to prevent.

A brilliant short pass from Kruse to Genki Haraguchi, also past Wolfsburg's Maximilian Arnold - who now has 259 Bundesliga appearances and thus as many as ex-goalkeeper Diego Benaglio. The Japanese also cleverly presented the ball to Awoniyi and he scored to make it 1-0. His sixth goal of the season in eight games - the Nigerian had just as often scored in 33 appearances in the first two Bundesliga seasons for Union.

Van Bommel reacted, first replacing Ridle Baku, then Weghorst.

And only seconds after the Dutchman came onto the pitch, Union keeper Luthe had to intervene in a Weghorst action.

Even later with a header.

But none of it was so compelling.

Substitute Becker punished the guests with the decisive second Union goal after a fine cross from also substituted Andreas Voglsammer.
