Unterallgäu - If you were born between 1953 and 1958 and still have a paper driver's license, you should exchange it now.

"Everyone else should definitely wait," says Rita Helms, head of the driving license office at the Unterallgäu district office.

By 2033 everyone must have the new EU driving license for 15 years.

As in all of Germany, the exchange of driving licenses has also started in the Unterallgäu.

The first thing to be exchanged is paper driving licenses.

People born between 1953 and 1958 need the new document by January 19, 2022. "Anyone who still has a pink or gray paper driver's license and was born during this period should apply for the card driver's license as soon as possible," advises Helms.

The application must be made in person.

You must bring your previous driver's license, ID card or passport as well as a current biometric photo.

If you apply for the new driver's license at the district office, it can in many cases be sent directly to your home.

The cost of the new document is 30.30 euros.

You can also apply for an exchange of your driving license at your local authority.

Anyone who is not one of the affected cohorts does not have to do anything for the time being. “Not all driving licenses lose their validity at the same time. In order to straighten out the production of the new driver's licenses, the legislator has introduced a staggering of the obligation to exchange, ”says Helms. In the case of paper driving licenses, the obligation to exchange is staggered according to the year of birth. For card driving licenses that are still open-ended - these were issued from 1999 to the beginning of 2013 - the year of issue is decisive. In the case of card driving licenses, however, the obligation to exchange does not begin until 2025.

All those currently not affected should wait, says Helms.

Because if you switch to a temporary document earlier than necessary, you lose time with the validity of the old driver's license.

"In order to be able to use the unlimited driver's license for as long as possible, the exchange should always be applied for in the course of the previous year before the deadline," recommends the head of the driver's license office.

Much more information and the deadlines for exchanging driving licenses can be found on the district's homepage at www.unterallgaeu.de/fuehrerschein.

Here you can also make an appointment online at the driver's license office.
