Probably in order to tilt the Emden lightship “Amrumbank / Deutsche Bucht”, unknown people had drilled holes in the hull.
Now the ship is in a shipyard for repair.
The police await the evaluation of traces.
Emden - Almost four months after unknown people drilled holes in the hull, the Emden lightship "Amrumbank / Deutsche Bucht" is back in the shipyard. A few days ago, two tugs pulled the traditional ship from its berth on the Ratsdelft to the Emder Werft und Dock GmbH (EWD) for repairs. There the ship should now be tilted in a controlled manner in order to weld the drill holes again from the outside, said the chairman of the lightship museum association Heinz-Günther Buß. In addition, the internal machines damaged by the ingress of water are to be overhauled. It is not yet clear how long the repair will take.
Unknown people gained access to the newly renovated lightship and Emden landmark in the middle of the city center and drilled four holes in the hull in mid-June.
Around 18 cubic meters of water ran into the engine room.
A member of the museum association to which the ship belongs had noticed the break-in in good time and prevented worse.
The police assume that the perpetrators wanted to at least bring the ship in a lopsided position and are investigating damage to property that is harmful to the community.

In the meantime, the damage has also been quantified. This is around 100,000 euros, said Buß. The club's insurance covers the costs of direct damage, such as repairing the hull. With the help of donations, the association wants to pay the costs for the damage inside the ship. Only last December the listed lightship was towed back to its berth on the Ratsdelft after extensive renovation work. The total cost of the renovation was just under five million euros.
The association hopes that possible witnesses of the crime will report to the police.
“Maybe there were vacationers there who observed something,” said Buss.
The police meanwhile rely on the evaluation of the evidence secured at the crime scene at the State Criminal Police Office in Hanover.
Results are expected in about a month, said a police spokeswoman in Leer.
