It is an important topic for the municipality of Oberau: How will the federal highway 23 from the Ammertal be connected to the new bypass, which is to be opened in May 2022?

The municipality has commissioned an expert opinion, the results of which are now available.

A curious solution is also among the proposals.

Oberau

- Seven more months. Then the federal highway 2 disappears from Oberau. One last hard winter. Then a new age begins in the 300-soul place. The tunnel is scheduled to open to traffic at the end of May 2022, when the sheet metal avalanche will roll around the outside of the village. Many long for the appointment. But for some people from Oberau, that's only half the story. The municipality has a second traffic problem: the federal highway 23 from the Ammertal. How is it connected - a central question that remains unanswered. There were many variants of the road construction authority, but the Oberauers didn't like them. The community therefore hired an independent engineering office to analyze the subject in detail. The results were presented yesterday. In brief: A route of the state building authority has been improved,New in the room is a spectacular, albeit unthinkable solution: a tunnel from Oberau Nord to behind Ettal.

Peter Imminger once again emphasized why the local council commissioned this report at the time.

"Because that is the most important decision for the future of our village," emphasized the CSU mayor.

“That's why we didn't just want to agree with the opinion of the road construction authority.” The order went to the Geoconsult ZT office from Puch near Salzburg.

"The whole thing cost us around 100,000 euros, but it was also worth it for our citizens."

Two tasks: look at existing routes, look for new variants

Günther Pachler and his colleagues received two orders. “We should take a close look at the known routes and then find out whether there are still variants that haven't been included before.” The engineers proceeded according to a clear model for both questions. They evaluated the individual routes according to certain criteria and sorted them out in a process of elimination. "The goal was always that there would be a clear improvement for the Oberauer."

The so-called zero variant without changing the previous route was the first to be eliminated. "Doesn't bring any relief," says Pachler. An underground connection from Ettaler Berg to the bypass tunnel? “Financially there is nothing for it, much too expensive.” That left the slope routes on the Mühlberg. The road construction authority had recently planned a connection to the north portal of the Oberau tunnel including a bridge in the area of the Gipsbruch settlement. The Austrians simply redesigned the route. It leads from the hairpin initially around 700 meters open on the mountain above the swimming pool, then runs in the lower part into a nearly 200 meter long tunnel and then turns from the west into the roundabout at the B2 tunnel portal. “In the open area, you could even build noise protection later.“The building authority had always shown that as not feasible. “But it definitely works, but I think we now have a different level of knowledge than our colleagues back then. We have precise data from tunneling, ”explained Pachler.

New route 80 meters away from the swimming pool and even 65 meters above it

Imminger likes the new solution.

"We wanted to be as far away as possible from the swimming pool and the residents, and that is what we achieved."

Some residents were still concerned about the noise.

"But there is no longer such a thing in a tunnel," replied Pachler.

“And the traffic to the roundabout travels at around 30 kilometers per hour.” In terms of costs, the experts were unable to provide precise information.

Imminger ventured an estimate: "I think we are in the range of 20 to 25 million euros."

The main road disappears from the hairpin to the entrance to the village

The question about the future of the remaining section of the B23 from the hairpin down to the western entrance to the town also came up.

Imminger didn't have any good news: “The road will be tight from the town sign.” There was no other way.

"The government says very clearly that we will not build a bypass for you if you want to keep the old road." The Oberauer should understand that.

It got a little stranger, so Pachler explained the variant that had not appeared in the plans up to that point. The specialist offered four interesting solutions, but in the end one would be most feasible: a 4.5 kilometer long tunnel beyond Ettal. "From our point of view that would be ideal because Ettal would then also be relieved," said Pachler. However, the costs should be at least ten times as much.

That left the time factor.

Imminger laughed out loud at the question.

"I would like to know that too." He could not estimate it.

“What is the next step politically in Germany? The Federal Nature Conservation Association has already said that it will definitely sue.” Factors that might not be beneficial.

In any case, the town hall chief was in contact with the road construction department in Weilheim.

“They only continue when we have made a final decision.” The local council will therefore deal with the issue as quickly as possible.
