Hanover - An increased interest in environmental issues and climate change brings many new members to nature conservation associations in Lower Saxony. "People want to be more active for nature, environmental protection and a better climate," said the Naturschutzbund (Nabu) in Lower Saxony. This can be seen in the increasing number of members and the increased number of inquiries to Nabu and other environmental associations.
The association recently announced that more than 5,000 members had joined in 2021 alone.
According to its own information, the Nabu in Lower Saxony has recorded a continuous increase since 2000.
In September the threshold of 125,000 members was exceeded.
The contributions ensured that Nabu was financially independent of politics and business, said association spokesman Matthias Freter.
In addition, the money enables long-term planning and the implementation of small and large projects across the country.

The regional association of the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) also reports increasing membership numbers on request.

The association currently has around 38,000 supporters and is expecting another increase in the current year.

Movements like Fridays for Future would have put this topic high on the agenda.
The corona pandemic made many people aware of the effects of the ever-advancing intrusion into nature and the associated destruction of habitats.
