The Wandlitz district of Basdorf will be commemorating the French singer Georges Brassens, who was born 100 years ago, with several concerts this coming weekend.

Musicians from five countries, most of them residing in Berlin, will sing and play songs from the legendary chanson at the 18th Brassens Basdorf Chanson Festival on Friday evening (October 22nd) in the "Kasino" in the Basdorfer Gardens.

Wandlitz - Also the mayor Peter Liebehenschel, known as the “singing mayor”, will pick up the guitar again.

Further concerts are planned for Saturday and Sunday.

Brassens, whose texts are school subject in France, was born on October 22, 1921 in Sète on the Mediterranean.

He died in 1981. The festival is a reminder that as a young man during the Second World War, between 1943 and 1944, he lived for a year as a slave laborer in Basdorf and had to work in an aircraft engine factory.

It was then that he wrote his first songs.

The festival has been held every year since 2004.
