The debate about an early exit from coal-fired power generation, sparked by the traffic light explorations in the federal government, is causing a dispute in the Brandenburg Kenya coalition.

While politicians from the SPD and CDU are skeptical or even negative, the Greens are fully behind it.

Potsdam - The efforts of the possible traffic light coalition in the federal government, ideally to bring the coal phase out to 2030, are causing a dispute in the Brandenburg Kenya coalition of the SPD, CDU and the Greens. CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann spoke of a “planned breach of the coal compromise” that does not envisage an exit until 2038. In contrast, Julia Schmidt, the head of the Green Party, sees an early exit in 2030 as the central measure to achieve the Paris climate targets. Lusatia in southern Brandenburg is severely affected by the phase-out of lignite.

"Science has long said that climate catastrophes and extreme weather events will increase if we do not significantly reduce CO2 emissions and protect our climate," said Schmidt on Sunday of the dpa and referred, among other things, to the flood disaster in western Germany in the summer. The massive expansion of renewable energies necessary for an early phase-out of coal had been overslept by the grand coalition in recent years, criticized Schmidt. "It is therefore good and urgently necessary that the traffic light exploratory paper corrects this course and promotes a massive expansion of renewable energies, for example through compulsory solar power on the roofs and the expansion of wind power."

Brandenburg's Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD), on the other hand, was cautious.

“First of all, these are explorations.

Now the other talks are about specific points, ”Steinbach told the German Press Agency on Saturday.

"Since Brandenburg is a leader in renewable energies and electricity is produced in Lusatia for the entire German network, we will take part in the discussion internally - but not have any public debates."

The SPD parliamentary group leader in the Brandenburg state parliament, Erik Stohn, doubted that an early coal phase-out before 2038 would be possible.

In the traffic light exploratory paper, too, an accelerated coal phase-out is linked to conditions, he said.

"For example, the massive expansion of renewable energies, so that the security of supply must be covered by electricity."

Fourth week in the clinic strike: no agreement yet

Almost four weeks after the start of the strike at the state-owned Berlin hospitals Vivantes and Charité, there is still no agreement on the collective bargaining dispute with the Verdi union.

"There are still talks," a Charité spokesman told the German Press Agency on Monday.

AfD man accuses the Saxon government of “vaccination apartheid”

The AfD member of the state parliament Thomas Prantl has accused the Saxon government of "vaccination apartheid" in the corona pandemic and thus made a questionable comparison.

The apartheid policy was an internationally largely outlawed action by the white minority population in South Africa, especially against the black majority, but also against other ethnic groups.

The network expansion nationwide is miserable and the expansion of renewable energies is completely inadequate, especially in the south of the republic.

"I have my doubts whether the necessary requirements will be met by 2030," emphasized Stohn on Saturday.

CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann had already vehemently rejected an early coal exit on Friday.

"The planned break in the coal compromise is a slap in the face of the people in Lusatia," emphasized Redmann.

"The planned exit as early as 2030 would be a tough cut for the entire region."

Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) also warned in September that an early coal phase-out could endanger energy security.

"Some are trying to create a quick exit mood here, but keep silent about the fact that we are still far from being able to secure an energy supply from renewable sources for the whole of Germany," he told the dpa.
