Thousands of people demonstrate on Sunday in downtown Dresden for open-mindedness and tolerance.

Two speeches could become a case for the prosecutor.

Dresden - In Dresden, broad resistance against the asylum and xenophobic Pegida movement formed on Sunday. Several alliances had called for counter-demonstrations and protest marches towards the city center. In the afternoon, the counter-demonstrators gathered on the Altmarkt with banners, whistles and rattles. Some had brought saucepans and spoons with them to protest loudly within sight and earshot.

On the other side of the square in the center of Dresden, the “Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West” (Pegida) had gathered to celebrate their seventh birthday, including Pegida founder Lutz Bachmann.

It is estimated that almost 1,000 people gathered in front of the stage, fewer than expected.

Significantly more, around 2,500 to 3,000 protesters, were on the other side.

The police had separated the two camps with barriers and a wide alley, and numerous officers were on site.

Among other things, the Technical University (TU) Dresden and the alliance "Heart instead of Hetze" had called for counter-protests.

Hundreds of people from both the TU and the Neustadt started moving towards the city center at noon.

Hacker attack on Stadtwerke Wismar

Stadtwerke Wismar claims to have been the victim of a hacker attack.

On Tuesday, the IT systems for the service were encrypted by an unknown attacker, the company announced on its website.

The security of supply with electricity, gas, water and heat is guaranteed, however.

"As part of our risk prevention, we have fundamentally separated the IT systems to ensure supply from our service processes in the commercial and technical areas," it said.

"At our university we live together that is based on respect for those who think, live and look different," said TU Rector Ursula Staudinger at a demonstration registered by the university.

Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) also called in advance to take to the streets on Sunday for diversity, cosmopolitanism and peaceful coexistence.

The meetings were largely peaceful, said a police spokesman on Sunday evening.

At the counter rally from Dresden Neustadt, pyrotechnics were occasionally ignited.

In addition, according to the police, two speeches that were made at the Pegida meeting are being checked by the public prosecutor for criminal relevance.

Several evictions were issued and isolated violations of the Assembly Act and bodily harm were examined.

Towards the end of the afternoon, the police said they prevented the two camps from meeting at the Altmarkt.

A 17-year-old is suspected of injuring a police officer.

Pegida has been observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony as a "proven extremist endeavor" since May.

Bachmann has long been considered a right-wing extremist.
