There has long been a dispute about the procedure up to and including decommissioning.

Experts now present their view of a possible interim storage facility.

Hanover / Remlingen - The decision for an interim storage facility near the ailing Asse nuclear waste storage facility in the Wolfenbüttel district has been reviewed after severe criticism.

The final report is to be presented today and handed over to the Federal Environment Ministry.

The location decision had, among other things, resulted in the Asse-2 support group, which looks after the interests of the people in the region, initially refused to cooperate and let the support process rest.

Thuringia wants Unesco status for the Green Belt natural monument

Thuringia can imagine an application of the natural monument Green Belt along the former inner-German border for the Unesco list as a world natural and cultural heritage.

At a two-day conference in Eisenach, which ended on Friday, it was discussed how the activities of the federal states on the Green Belt could be coordinated by a national competence center based in Thuringia, the Ministry of the Environment said on request on Friday.

In the former mine near Remlingen there are around 126,000 barrels with low and medium level radioactive waste in 13 chambers.

Because water seeps in, the warehouse has to be cleared.

There is a legal mandate to shut down the Asse immediately.

The retrieval is expected to start in 2033.
