United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the countries of the world to unite to eradicate the Corona epidemic and poverty and create a world of justice and opportunity for all.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Guterres said in a statement today, published on the United Nations website, that "extreme poverty is on the rise, with nearly 120 million people caught in its clutches last year, after Covid 19 devastated economies and societies."
Guterres pointed out that the inequality in vaccines allows mutated versions to evolve and spread, condemning the world to millions of deaths and prolonging an economic slowdown that could cost trillions of dollars, noting that there is a need to address the debt crisis and ensure the recovery of investment in the countries most in need.
Guterres believes that recovery cannot be achieved with only half the potential. Economic investments must target women entrepreneurs, provide more formalization to the informal sector, focus on education, social protection, universal child care, health care and decent work, as well as bridging the digital divide.
