The corona situation in Bavaria is getting worse.

The incidence is increasing.

Nevertheless, a Munich virologist defends the easing of the past few weeks.

Munich - Corona has come to stay - despite the vaccination.

You can see that particularly clearly in Bavaria.

As early as Friday (October 15), the incidence rose again above 100 for the first time. And the value continues to grow.

On Sunday, October 17th, according to the RKI, it is already 109. In addition, the seven largest corona hotspots in Germany are in the Free State.

The Berchtesgadener Land district remains the single leader with an incidence of 336.7.

A Munich virologist has now predicted that this is just the beginning.

It is expected to get worse in the coming months.

Nevertheless, he thinks the easing makes sense.

Corona in Bavaria: low numbers of infections due to the good weather

With the cold season, the risk of infection increases again. "Our lives are shifting inwards," says virologist Oliver Keppler from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich *. The infection process will also continue to pick up speed. We owe the mild autumn to the fact that the numbers are not as high as last year. "The weather has also helped us in the fight against the corona pandemic * in the past few weeks: It was mostly friendly and the temperatures were often quite warm," the expert told

.

Not only the weather has helped us so far.

A whole mix of protective measures would not have caused the numbers to explode as much as they did in 2020. “A good vaccination rate - that is the central component - many people who have recovered, a high-quality test infrastructure and yes, also a good understanding of the transmission routes of the virus.

Situation-related protective measures are of course also included, ”says Keppler.

People would now comply with the hygiene rules independently and often wash their hands or refrain from shaking hands.

Corona in Bavaria: Relaxations made sense

Although, in the opinion of the Munich virologist, the fourth wave is picking up more and more speed, numerous relaxations in recent weeks made sense.

"Basically, in this phase of the pandemic, we have to try to relax various areas in order to see what is justifiable and where we still have to maintain hygiene measures or tests to ensure security."

You can also see clearly that the infection process predominantly takes place in the unvaccinated.

According to the Bavarian Ministry of Health, the incidence on Friday was 26.2 among those who were vaccinated, but the value among those who were not vaccinated was 204.5.

That is why the ministry continues to be cautious.

"If the vaccination rate is not high enough, we cannot rule out an exponential growth in the number of cases," said a spokeswoman.

Corona in Bavaria: Expert does not see a wave of flu rolling on us

Germany will probably also be spared another feared wave.

According to Keppler, the flu will probably not play a major role this year.

“I don't expect a severe flu season,” says the scientist.

The viruses were well pushed back by the Corona hygiene measures.

“In the southern hemisphere, there were hardly any infections for two winters in a row.

I therefore consider it unlikely that the virus will enter us efficiently in the coming winter, ”says Keppler.

"Covid-19 * must also be our main focus this winter."

The virologist nevertheless advises certain population groups to have a flu vaccination.

"All people to whom the Standing Vaccination Commission recommended the flu vaccination in previous years should be vaccinated as before." This applies to all people over the age of 60, pregnant women, those with previous illnesses and medical staff.
