Karlsfeld - A popular, almost idyllic walk in the middle of Karlsfeld.

Along the Würm, past trees and biotopes.

Should cycling still be permitted there between Nikolaus-Lenau-Strasse and Reschenbachstrasse?

Yes, the municipal council's transport committee unanimously agreed - provided the cyclists remain sensible.

The unpaved path is marked with the signs “Walkway” and “Cyclists free”.

What many do not know, however, is that it is still a long way from being a cycle path.

"Cyclists free means that there is a sidewalk on which cycling is exceptionally permitted," explained Günther Rustler, traffic expert in the Karlsfeld town hall.

But many cyclists did not behave accordingly, there had been multiple complaints about "hooliganism and endangerment".

The committee nevertheless decided against a cycling ban and instead opted for an awareness campaign.

They want to inform about the legal situation and hope that the cyclists will understand.

After the summer vacation 2022, a decision is to be made as to whether the campaign was successful.

If not, there will be a ban on the way to the Würm.

Before the vote, the CSU was in favor of banning cycling on the path.

The road is too narrow, conflicts and dangers are inevitable, said traffic officer Bernd Wanka.

Therefore, the route should be reserved exclusively for pedestrians in the future.

Franz Trinkl (SPD) was not in the meeting room.

Rustler read the opinion of the SPD local council and bicycle consultant: Trinkl said he was “not enthusiastic” about the proposal of the local administration to make the path a pure sidewalk.

He often uses the path himself, but has not yet experienced a dangerous situation.

Thomas Nuber (Greens) was of the same opinion: Karlsfeld wanted to become a bicycle-friendly municipality, so there should be no further bans if possible.

Thomas Kirmse (SPD) said that the problematic situations are "isolated cases that exist everywhere".

Anton Flügel (Free Voters) said that the ban also had to be monitored, but there was a lack of capacity.

The CSU also agreed to the compromise of trying an information campaign.

Bicycle specialist Trinkl explained that he would personally stand by the path to educate cyclists about the meaning of the signs.
