Several hundred people demonstrated on Sunday with a “walk in the village” for the preservation of the open-cast brown coal mining site in Lützerath, which is threatened by demolition.

A police spokesman said the three-hour action with around 700 participants had been peaceful by the afternoon.

The “Endegebiet” alliance reported that a blockade tower and a tripod tripod had been built.

Lützerath - The police spoke of a few meters high tree trunks and branches that had been put together in a tent.

A year ago, there were houses and trees on the area in question, and they wanted to prevent further demolition and clearing, according to a message from “Endelassung”.

RWE intends to begin preparatory work for the excavation of further properties in the town on the edge of the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine.

Lützerath, a district of Erkelenz, has only a few houses and residents.

Environmental activists Greta Thunberg and Luisa Neubauer were there at the end of September.

The “All Villages Remain” initiative announced weekly village walks.
