Dogs as far as the eye can see.

Over 2000 four-legged friends were registered for the pedigree dog fair in Rostock.

The animals were also able to take part in a film casting.

Animal rights activists sharply criticize the exhibition.

Rostock - Under the scrutiny of the four jurors, Bono runs one last lap through the ring before owner Anja Urbaniak lifts the pedigree dog from the floor onto a small folding table.

Some spectators behind the barriers applaud.

For the International Pedigree Dog Show, the 48-year-old traveled an extra 450 kilometers from Zielona Góra to Rostock this weekend - it is her first international competition across the Polish border, as she says.

In Rostock she competes for the “Best in Show” trophy.

On both days, dogs from 271 breeds - most of the animals were Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and Dalmatians - competed against each other in 20 so-called competition rings.

Urbaniak carefully pulls her dog's lips apart for the jury. “The age?” Asks one of the judges while examining the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's teeth. “Four years,” says Urbaniak. The judge lifts the dog's tail, strokes Bono's silky smooth fur and nods. When the other two pedigree dogs finally ran through the ring in this round, one of the judges whispered: “The one is really a one.” Bono, on the other hand, came in second. In Poland Bono became champion for the first time last year, according to Urbaniak.

Her voice is barely audible because the soundtrack for “Pirates of the Caribbean” echoes from loudspeakers through the 13,000 square meter exhibition hall. There are 2071 four-legged friends registered there - another 300 more than in the previous year, says project manager Kathrin Schiemann. Last year, 16,000 visitors visited the pedigree dog fair despite the pandemic. On Sunday afternoon, she assumed that there would be at least as many there this year.

Recovered, vaccinated and tested visitors were admitted according to the 3G rule. And the animals also needed proof of vaccination: "In addition to the corona requirements for humans, we make sure that all dogs are vaccinated against rabies so that there are no super-spreader events." Dog collars, dog clothes, soothing drops and ultrasonic toothbrushes for your four-legged friends.

A highlight this year: the film casting for dogs. The Dortmund film dog agency also trains four-legged friends for TV programs such as “The best show in the world”, “Tatort” and “The teacher”. Tino Wodrich from the island of Poel has prepared well for it with the dog Nala. With applause, Nala runs through Wodrich's legs and then jumps onto the 31-year-old's back. "These eyes - you, you, you," praised presenter and animal trainer Marion Albers. The islander researched the tricks on the Internet, he says.

The animal welfare organization Peta had already strongly criticized the event in advance in a press release.

Trade fairs like the “International Pedigree Dog Exhibition” tempted people to buy bred animals.

Thousands of animals would be waiting for a new home in German animal shelters, according to the organization.

Sensitive creatures such as dogs should not be degraded to display objects.

"We are the total opponents of overbreeding," says project manager Schiemann.

The event should rather help to find a breeder who adheres to laws and rules.

“The dogs that are here are used to the hustle and bustle from an early age.

It's normal for them. ”In addition, owners have a close relationship with their four-legged friends.
