About 17 American missionaries and their families have been abducted by gang members in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, the New York Times reported Sunday night.
The missionaries were abducted from a bus leading to the airport.
The details of the abduction are still unclear, but local officials said the missionaries were abducted from a bus leading to the airport, to drop off some of the group members before continuing on to another destination in Haiti.
Haiti has been in a state of political upheaval for years, and kidnappings of both rich and poor have become alarmingly common.
But even in a country accustomed to these situations, the abduction of such a large group of Americans shocked the country's officials.

Violence is rising throughout the capital, Port-au-Prince.
According to some estimates, the gangs now control about half of the city.
On Monday, gangs shot at a school bus in the city, injuring at least five people, including students, while another public bus was hijacked by a gang.
Due to political struggles in the country the sense of security there has become low.
Protesters angry over widespread corruption demanded the ouster of President Jubilee Moyes two years ago, effectively paralyzing the country.
The opposition prevented patients from receiving treatment in hospitals, children from attending school, workers going to the rare jobs available and even halting the flow of electricity in parts of the country.
Since then, the gangs have only become more assertive.
They act as they please, kidnapping children on their way to school and priests in the middle of providing their services.
The country's political turmoil escalated further after Moyes was murdered at his home in July, a murder left unresolved.
The few officials left in the country immediately began fighting for control of the government, with officials blaming each other for taking part in a conspiracy to assassinate the president.
The abduction of American missionaries came just a day after the UN Security Council extended its mission in Haiti by nine months in a unanimous vote. Many Haitians called on the United States to send forces to stabilize the situation, but the Biden administration was reluctant to enter the area.
