The Russian Defense Ministry announced today that a MiG-31 fighter belonging to the Russian Air Force intercepted a US B-1B bomber aircraft over the Sea of Japan and prevented it from violating the Russian border.
Sputnik news agency quoted the ministry as saying in a statement today that “the Russian airspace control devices detected over the neutral waters of the Sea of Japan an air target approaching the Russian border, where the air target was identified as a US Air Force B-1B strategic bomber, where it was sent. The statement added that it was confirmed that the MiG-31 flight, which was sent to locate an air target and prevent border violation, "was strictly in accordance with international rules."
Last Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry summoned the military attache of the US embassy in Moscow, against the backdrop of the US destroyer (Chaffee) attempt to violate the Russian maritime borders in the Sea of Japan, stressing that what the destroyer's crew had done was unprofessional.
