New testimony sheds light on the affair of the disappearance of the boy Nissim Sheetrit, in which the three suspects involved, two men and a woman from "Shuvu Banim", were arrested early this morning (Sunday).

According to a source close to one of them, the community knew about the story, suspected their involvement, and kept it a secret.

He said that when Rabbi Berland fled to the north of the country - the stories began to float: "It's the kind of thing you hear about and you suffocate, everyone kept it a terrible and horrible secret."

The source added that "from the community's point of view, all those arrested are those who have disagreed with the rabbi in recent years. And this is a punishment for those who left Rabbi Berland."

The two men are also suspected of murdering Avi Edri.

The detention of one of them was extended for a week on suspicion of premeditated murder, kidnapping for murder and conspiracy to commit a crime.

During the hearing to extend the detention, the police representative said that the suspect was questioned 35 years ago after Sheetrit's disappearance, after various findings were collected - but this did not lead to an arrest.

The arrests of the three were made about a week before Rabbi Eliezer Berland, who was convicted of the offenses of extortion, fraud and intimidation, was due to return to prison to complete the remainder of his prison sentence.

This, after he has been under house arrest for the past few months due to his medical condition.

In June 2021, Rabbi Berland was sentenced to 18 months in prison, from which he will be deducted about 12 months that Rabbi Berland was in custody during the investigation and trial.

In January 1986, Nissim Sheetrit, a 17-year-old ultra-Orthodox young man, disappeared after arranging to meet Mike, a man who had met Sheetrit and his friends a week earlier.

According to testimonies and publications at the time, Sheetrit had been violently attacked earlier by the modesty guards operating at the time on the Haredi street.

Attempts over the years to locate Mike, the anonymous man, have stalled.

In 1990, the body of Edri, who was the director of a yeshiva in Jerusalem, was found and his body was found lying in the woods.

The two men and the woman, in their 60s, were arrested this morning by detectives from the Central Unit of the Jerusalem District.

Following their arrest, the three were taken for questioning in the Central Unit of the Jerusalem District, and are now being brought to court, where the police are expected to request an extension of detention in accordance with the developments of the investigation.
