A mixture of vaccination protection and survived corona infection could bring in a kind of “super immunity” that could become a way out of the pandemic.

Munich - Even after a pandemic for over a year and a half, the various mutations of the coronavirus still represent the greatest danger for the population. Even if the global vaccination campaign continues and people around the world have very good, if not perfect, protection against a severe course of Covid-19.

Coronavirus: "super immunity"?

Scientists conduct research with laboratory mutations

However, new mutations of the coronavirus also pose a considerable risk for people who have complete vaccination protection. This is due to the fact that the mutations can develop resistance to the existing vaccines due to their nature.

In a study published in the journal Nature in September, scientists from Rockefeller University in New York created their own coronavirus from the existing mutations in order to learn more about the effects of human antibodies.

Coronavirus: hybrid immunity as a way out of the pandemic?

The resulting mutation showed itself to be completely resistant in the subsequent laboratory tests, against virtually all antibodies with which the virus was associated.

with reference to the study, however, antibodies were found in a group of people to which the laboratory mutation was not resistant.

These were the antibodies that were found in the test subjects who both had complete vaccination protection and who had already survived an infection with the coronavirus.

"It is very likely that they will work against any future variant of Sars-CoV-2," said the virologist Theodora Hatziioannou, who was involved in the study, referring to the special antibodies.

“Super immunity”: Researchers want to imitate protection after infection and vaccination

This hybrid protection of vaccination and infection is now viewed as a kind of "super immunity" and can play a major role in relation to a potential end to the pandemic.

Scientists around the world are researching this hybrid immunity and are looking for ways in which it can be made available to a large number of people without having to bear the risk of infection.

Because when it comes to this, the researchers agree: the risks of a corona infection before a vaccination clearly outweigh the advantages that result from the protection created in this way.

One possibility, however, would be to imitate the protection that a survived corona infection offers with a booster vaccination.

A prolonged interval between the first and second vaccination could also produce similar effects.

Should scientific breakthroughs occur in this area, the way out of the coronavirus pandemic could be closer than ever.
