There are parliamentary elections in Hungary in 2022.

An outsider could put the right-wing national prime minister in trouble.

The opposition unites behind the non-party.

Budapest / Munich - Viktor Orbán could be dangerous: The conservative and non-party outsider Peter Marki-Zay is running as an opposition candidate against the right-wing national prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary election in 2022.

It is precisely this conservative orientation that could bring Orbán into trouble.

Coming from the Hungarian lowlands, an avowed Catholic and father of seven children - this is exactly how Marki-Zay could address voters in the country who are conservative but may no longer be so convinced of Orbán's * rule.

The Prime Minister is under EU observation * because of his governance.

At the same time, Marki-Zay does not piss off the urban, rather left-wing voters of the big cities, because his conservatism is paired with open-mindedness, tolerance and the ability to compromise.

Orbán challenger: Conservative could pose a threat to Hungary's head of government

The 49-year-old challenger won a primary run by the opposition with a clear gap to the social democrat Klara Dobrev. This was announced by the pre-election commission on Sunday evening after the votes were counted. Marki-Zay achieved 56.71 percent, the social democratic rival 43.29 percent of the vote. 662,016

voters voted within six days by Saturday evening.

It is the first time that such an area code has taken place in Hungary. Six previously divided opposition parties - from the left-green to the right-wing conservative - are supposed to support Peter Marki-Zay in the election campaign against Viktor Orbán. "Today we also changed the opposition," said the pre-election winner. The opposition can only succeed in defeating the incumbent head of government if they work together. “The way out is neither right nor left, only up,” he added. He agreed with Dobrev that the cohesion of the opposition could not be destroyed.

Marki-Zay studied economics, electrical engineering and history.

From 2004 to 2009 he lived with his family in Canada and the USA.

He only got into politics in 2018.

At that time he won - also surprisingly - the mayoral election in Hodmezövasarhely.

Until then, the place was considered an impregnable stronghold of the Orban party Fidesz.

The following year he repeated the election victory.
