El Al workers threaten strike: "Without the girls, all possibilities are at stake" | Israel today

2021-10-18T15:11:30.428Z

One of the main points of contention between the employees and the management is the matter of the company's activities on Saturday • This announcement comes following the imminent closure of Sun Dor, which operated flights on Saturday for EL AL

Against the background of the apparent changes that will take place in the way El Al operates, the company's employees sent a letter to the company's management in which they expressed their anger: "The new owners do not understand us, there is no reason to continue talks.

This announcement, issued on behalf of the El Al Workers' Committee, comes following the imminent closure of Sun Dor and the complete cessation of activities on Saturday.

Senior officials in the company, who are involved in the matter, claim that a strike is also an option that is being examined and that today (Monday) another meeting will be held aimed at trying to prevent the dramatic steps and reach understandings that can allow the company to continue working regularly.

One of the significant difficulties facing employees and new owners is the issue of Saturday activity.

So far, El Al has operated flights on Saturday through its subsidiary Sun Dor.

According to company executives, Sun Dor is expected to close soon and the cargo flight operations will also be stopped, which will completely stop El Al operations on Saturdays.

Such a decision is expected to significantly reduce the company's operations, which may lead to further layoffs and downsizing of the company.

As you may recall, the new owner of the company, Kenny Rosenberg, is a religious businessman who came from New York.

Those close to the issue say that there will be an impact in this respect on the company and that the new owners are not willing to compromise on Saturday activities.

At the same time, according to the letter published by the company, the owners informed them that the company would operate flights to profitable destinations only and apparently, the number of EL AL destinations will be reduced very soon.

Among the workers, there is anger over the decision, claiming that El Al offers an extensive network of lines, and when it is reduced so significantly, El Al's power, influence and presence on lines to Israel will fade and those who fill the lines that will be canceled will be foreign companies.

To date, there has been very little, if any, activity on EL AL flights to Madrid, Venice and other destinations that were very significant prior to the Corona period.
