At Thuringia's largest university in Jena, significantly fewer West German students started their studies this semester.
The number of West German freshmen had declined by around 20 percent compared to the previous year, the Friedrich Schiller University announced on Monday on the basis of preliminary figures.
On the other hand, there is still a high level of interest in studying in Jena among East German students.
Jena - One can only speculate about the reasons, it said.
Presumably, however, it also has something to do with the mobility that has changed due to the corona pandemic.
A spokesman also said the trend had already emerged in recent years.
According to the university, around a quarter of the 3900 freshmen come from the western German states.
At the start of the lectures on Monday, the university had a total of 17,700 students, about as many as in previous years.
