Special envoy to El Alto
Outskirts of the city of El Alto.
On a large unpaved avenue with rutted sidewalks, a few stray dogs are fighting over the meager contents of a trash can.
The home of Munasim Kullakita (“Love yourself, little sister”, in Aymara) is located there, under the sun of the Andes, at 4000 meters above sea level.
Not a single tree in this long dusty street, like everywhere in this city that the massive rural exodus has transformed into a sprawling urban center.
Blind walls, several meters high and made of bare brick, surround a house that can hardly be seen from the street.
Outside, there is nothing to indicate the fireplace, not even the little bell on the right side.
Here, the gate is always closed, without exception.
